Narrative and Cinematic theory in my Media Product

Todorov's greatest contribution to literary theory was his defining of the Fantastic, the fantastic uncanny, and the fantastic marvellous. Todorov defines the fantastic as being any event that happens in our world that seems to be supernatural. Upon choosing whether the event was real or imaginary, Todorov says that we enter into the genres of uncanny and marvellous. In the fantastic uncanny, the event that occurs is actually an illusion of some sort. The "laws of reality" remain intact and also provide a rational explanation for the fantastic event. In the fantastic marvelous, the supernatural event that occurs has actually taken place and therefore the "laws of reality" have to be changed to explain the event. And if the viewer cannot understand what is going on or an answer then the text is purely fantastic.
Upon the occurrence of the event, we must decide if the event was an illusion or whether it is real and has actually taken place. This theory plays a large part in my teaser trailer the reality of the protagonist is she there, is she crazy, or simply having seen a parallel life to the one she is living. I would say my teaser trailer will fall more into the category of marvellous or purely fantastic rather than uncanny, because canny has a larger sense of realism it uses things like drug or alcohol to explain the supernatural occurrence or strange events people encounter. Todorov’s theory has got me intrigued I wish to understand more about narrative and cinematic theory to further my teaser trailers quality and reality to current media product.

Todorov’s theory in cinematic genre is called Fantastique which is a French term for overlaps with science fiction, horror and fantasy. What is distinctive about the fantastique is the combination of supernatural phenomena into an otherwise realist narrative. This has is certainly shown in my film by the way in which my main focal character is shown to be in normal picture perfect locations with snippets of supernatural events appearing throughout the teaser trailer.
